About

Plum Pear Apple Designs is the name of the design company that I started earlier this year (2008). I’ve always loved the way that those 3 fruits sound together, and have actually wanted it as a name for *something* for a few years now. I’ve had the domain name for a few years but just have never done anything with it.

So why capes?  I have a 2 year old son, Mason, and earlier this year I scheduled a session with a photographer to take his picture.  She asked if I had a Superhero cape to bring along to the shoot as a prop. I didn’t have one for him, but I borrowed one from my sister-in-law. It was a Superman/Batman combo – just the typical red/blue colors, nothing special – But Mason LOVED it. He wore it everywhere, and didn’t want to take it off for mealtime, bedtime, running errands, anything. I figured if he was going to have a cape that was his constant companion – it was at least going to be cute! I envisioned in my head a cape in his favorite colors with his initial on it. I looked around online and in local stores and I just couldn’t find anything that fit the image in my head.

So what’s that saying — necessity breeds invention? I made a simple pattern and cut a logo out of felt and my first Superhero cape was born. Mason wouldn’t take it off — it was a hit!

Soon a few neighbor kids wanted one and their moms asked me if I would make one for them … and I posted a few pictures of Mason in his cape on my website and had a few inquiries that way … and it just kind of grew from there. Somewhere along the way I figured out that I knew what I wanted my Plum Pear Apple Designs to be for — my business of making Superhero Capes for Superhero Kids.

I’m a stay at home mom that hand makes each of these capes myself. You can often find me cutting felt at the dinner table, sewing emblems in the car, and begging my husband to stop along the way when I spot a new fabric store. I don’t employ anyone but I do owe a huge thanks to my mom that sometimes comes over to help me prewash and cut fabric.

I put a lot of time and love into each Superhero cape I make – because I think that every kid deserves to be a Superhero with his OWN initial on the back of his cape.
